Freedom From Her

This was a part of Bee Wilkinson's final major project. Set in a fantasy world where women are born with fairy wings and men receive sacred tribal markings, this story follows the journey of a transgender character navigating their identity in a society bound by rigid tradition. Born with wings, the protagonist knows they are male—and the only way to truly affirm this truth is through a painful act of self-removal. By tearing off their own wings, they symbolically and physically transition, reclaiming agency over their body and identity.

This powerful narrative explores the realities of gender dysphoria and self-mutilation, offering a raw yet hopeful lens on the trans experience. Despite the pain, the character emerges whole—finally seen, finally at peace. Freedom From Her is a modern fairy tale that reminds us identity is not defined by appearance, but by how deeply we know ourselves.
